A rainbow trout rises to take the fly fisherman’s well-presented lure, providing a moment of opportunity. Whether one pursues trout with a fly rod or bluegill sunfish with a cane pole, fishing provides a continual stream of lessons in the practice of right timing. Knowledge, skill, attentiveness, and patience are required in order to catch a fish via the right action at the right moment. Even the most expensive, sophisticated equipment cannot compensate for a failure of right timing. Similarly, in our daily lives many successes occur when the time is right to pursue them. The Chinese calligraphic on the piece is a three-character excerpt from chapter 8 of the Tao Te Ching which means “Movement right timing.”
