A rainbow trout rises to take the fly fisherman’s well-presented lure. Whether one pursues trout with a fly rod or bluegill sunfish with a cane pole, fishing provides a continual stream of lessons in the practice of right timing. Within the realm of possibilities that nature provides, the fisherman’s knowledge and skill helps give birth to the moment of opportunity. Attentiveness and patience are further required in order to reap that opportunity through the right action at the right moment. Even the most expensive, sophisticated equipment cannot compensate for a failure of right timing.
The inscription is a three character excerpt from chapter 8 of the Tao Te Ching, and states the lesson in the characteristically terse form of this Chinese classic: “Movement right timing.”
